Who is NITL?

European news aggregator, NITL, is reinventing how we consume news – in three sentences or less. News articles from over 500 sources are summarized daily by the NITL team for use on its mobile app.

The mission? “Save society and the planet with the news you consume.” NITL curates a newsfeed based on your interests. Each news article on your feed will have an action button, enabling you to contribute to a cause, message members of parliament, sign petitions, and more. What’s more, it’s ad-free!

The challenge

Daily summarization of news took a full team of editors hours of work. Plus, EU copyright regulations prohibit using more than eight words in a row from an original news article. Even though NITL links back to the full, original article, their three-line summaries must abide by this regulation.

With so many resources spent on accomplishing this manual task, NITL needed a way to automate their news aggregation to open growth opportunities in other areas.

The Goal

Automate news summarization per EU regulations to streamline operations, improve team efficiency, minimize spend, and grow the business. All the while keeping the reader experience smooth and joyful.

The solution

The Skim AI team built an abstractive summarization model that works with NITL’s Chrome extension API. This model can summarize according to NITL’s desired character limit (within EU regulations) alongside other specifications.

The news aggregation AI model can identify the type of story it’s summarizing and categorize it, enabling NITL can continue to deliver on pre-selected personal interests of their users: editorial, sports, politics, and more.
